Our Journey ...
photo

Schmaedeke Funeral Home has been serving the Chicagoland area as a family owned and operated business, spanning several generations since 1932.

Our Journey began with Orville J. Schmaedeke and his "Vision of Service," which focused on meeting the needs of grieving families with care and compassion.

Early in his career, Orville began a brief yet pivotal joint business venture with Eugene Harris by opening the Harris-Schmaedeke Funeral Home in November of 1936. The Funeral home was housed in the renowned Jacob Henry Mansion, in Joliet, Illinois.

In 1938, along with his wife Martha, Orville opened the doors to their own home nestled atop the hill at 14205 Union Ave., in the then rural town of Orland Park. When the need of a neighbor would arise, they would make ready their home by clearing out the dining room and living room to accommodate people for a visitation.

In December of 1959, Orville and Martha opened the doors of their second Funeral Home at 10701 South Harlem Ave., in the village of Worth.

Orville's son Richard joined his father in 1963 as the second generation of funeral care providers. To this date, both locations continue to serve the needs of their neighbors and surrounding communities.

The journey that began as a "Vision of Service" is as strong today as it was in 1932.

Richard and his wife Janeen, along with their family and staff, continue their commitment to exemplary customer service and the families they serve both now and for generations to come.
